Schaeffler Appears At IAA Mobility 2023 |Focus On Future Transportation

On September 5, the 2023 German International Automobile and Smart Mobility Expo (IAA Mobility 2023) kicked off in Munich. At this exhibition, Schaeffler showcased a series of innovative products and technologies for future transportation, including the latest drive products, chassis systems and low-friction technical solutions.

In addition, Schaeffler also teamed up with VDL Groep to showcase an autonomous shuttle bus demonstration vehicle for public transportation. The two companies plan to jointly develop and produce the new model, with Schaeffler contributing its technology and capabilities in the drive and chassis areas.

Increase investment in motor production capacity globally

Schaeffler offers a wide range of product solutions in the field of electric drives, covering a comprehensive product portfolio from electric motors to thermal management, as well as a wide range of applications from electric cargo bikes to electric aircraft. A broad product positioning also enables Schaeffler to achieve successful business development. In 2022, Schaeffler will win 5 billion euros in new orders in the electric drive field. Since the establishment of the electric drive division in 2018, the company's cumulative orders in this field have reached 16 billion euros. Klaus Rosenfeld, CEO of the Schaeffler Group, said: “A deep understanding of the entire system as well as the individual components is key to our success. In terms of cumulative orders, electric drives are a huge development for us. market.”


Schaeffler has core technological advantages in the field of electrification, especially in motor technology. Schaeffler's motor product range includes asynchronous and permanent magnet synchronous motors, as well as axial flux motors for sports cars. Schaeffler also develops and produces magnetless motors, or externally excited synchronous motors. "This year alone, we have launched seven electric motor customer projects, which shows that our products are widely recognized by the market," said Mattis Zink, CEO of Schaeffler Group's Automotive Technology Division.

No single motor can meet the needs of all power levels and applications, which is why Schaeffler adopts a multi-variety and modular approach to motor development. Madis Zink said: "In order to maximize the cost efficiency of motor production, we develop production processes simultaneously with motor development to give full play to our core advantages in industrialization." By 2026, Schaeffler will More than 500 million euros have been invested globally in the expansion of motor production capacity and the construction of new production lines. This is also the key to Schaeffler's ability to quickly industrialize environmentally friendly drive technology in a fast, cost-effective way.

Continuously promote the mass production process of innovative products

In the fields of electric drive and autonomous driving, more and more innovative products from Schaeffler are being put into mass production. For example, Schaeffler's rear-wheel steering system has been put into production and used in a pure electric SUV model of a world-renowned automobile manufacturer. In the next few years, six customer projects will gradually enter the mass production stage.


This year, Schaeffler’s highly integrated thermal management system will enter series production. With this innovative product, Schaeffler’s precise control of system temperatures will also benefit electric vehicles. Schaeffler thermal management solutions improve battery performance and service life, keeping all components operating within the optimal temperature range. In 2024, more mass production projects of this integrated thermal management system will be launched. In 2023, the Free Drive drive system developed by Schaeffler for electric cargo bicycles will also be put into mass production. As the core component of the chainless drive system, Free Drive reduces system maintenance and wear, making it possible to realize a new bicycle structural design.

In 2023, Schaeffler's in-wheel motors will also be put into mass production and installed on municipal vehicles produced by three manufacturers. In 2022, Schaeffler launched eRocker, an electromechanical roller rocker arm solution for engine variable valve control. This system, combined with an electronic cam phaser, can help hybrid vehicles achieve a 10% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Schaeffler also announced that it will start mass production of 800V silicon carbide motor controllers in 2025.
